Have you heard of Yabusame?
It is the ultimate samurai skill that only the top-class samurai in Japan could offer to the gods as a “prayer for peace”.
In modern times, the general term for riding a horse and shooting a bow is called Yabusame.
We were fortunate enough to be able to train at a Yabusame dojo for many years.
It was extremely difficult for us to reproduce the techniques that even the old-time samurai had struggled with, and we were nowhere near the level of the top-class samurai of old.
We were overwhelmed by the sublime skills and superior mental strength of the top-class samurai of old.
Even so, we were fortunate enough to perform the Yabusame ritual of praying for peace in front of former US President Barack Obama.
Above all, because Yabusame is a technique that is performed in complete unison with the horse, we needed to fully understand the horse.
In order to entrust our lives to a horse with whom we cannot communicate, we had to get rid of all our preconceived ideas.
And at some point, I began to think that in order to become the ultimate samurai, what we needed to do was to acquire “diversity”.
Having a straight core but also a flexible concept like bamboo was the essence of the samurai.
That is why I think that the teachers and specialists of all the “ways” (such as Kyudo, Kendo, and Sadou etc) are often tolerant and soft-spoken.
The Yabusame teacher was a small old man, but when foreigners were nearby, he would always speak to them in his friendly way, even if his English wasn't very good.
And he was always more concerned about the horses than anyone else.
We want to be like that too.
We want to use the ultimate skill of “diversity” that the samurai taught us to spread the samurai spirit to as many people as possible and solve the world's crises.
Since horses and people who don't understand each other's language can become one, people should be able to connect with each other even more.
We sincerely hope that the samurai spirit will bring peace to the world.
